The guest speaker for the November 3, 2020 meeting<\/strong> outlined Newburyport’s anti-racism campaign, \u201cHate Has No Port Here<\/a><\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The effort was sparked by two recent incidents of racism in the city, including slurs shouted at a Black teenager.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cWe\u2019re at the very beginning stages,\u201d said Cynthia, a West Newbury resident. \u201cWe\u2019re beginning a dialog. That\u2019s the only way to move forward, to recognize the problem. We see racism in every society. What are the next steps?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of the solution is in a short video produced by Society member Stephen Sills<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Featured are such luminaries as Mayor Donna Holaday, State Senator Diana DiZoglio, State Rep. James Kelcourse, City Councilor Jared Eigerman, and City Councilor Afroz Khan, and Chamber of Commerce President Frank Cousins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cynthia promised to keep us in the loop on the progress of the campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0May 21, 2019 meeting<\/strong>\u00a0welcomed a new member, Regina Correia Branco, a retired bursar from\u00a0Northern Essex
\nCommunity College<\/a>, sponsored by Patty McGrath.<\/p>\n

Marcos Pinto was introduced by Christin Walth, a past speaker, who is hosting Marcos on his stay in Newburyport, sponsored by\u00a0USAID<\/a>\u00a0in the hopes of \u201cpromoting new leaders rather than fighting wars later.\u201d For 450 years,\u00a0Timor<\/a>\u00a0was a colony of\u00a0Portugal<\/a>, said Christin, \u201cand not in a benevolent
\nway.\u201d The half-island won independence in 1973 but was subsequently overtaken by Indonesia before
\nregaining independence in 2002 as\u00a0Timor-Leste<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the youngest nation in Asia \u201cand perhaps the world.\u201d
\nWith 49% unemployment, the nation faces terrible poverty, though families take in relatives to prevent homelessness. Many children eat three meals a day of rice porridge. Life is particularly difficult in the dry season and in rural areas. Food is the number-one import for the nation of 1.3 million. Marcos, who is here to study U.S. responses to assorted social issues, described the issue of early marriage and childbirth in his own country and the need for better nutrition to raise healthier babies. The Timor-Leste political structure includes a president, a prime minister, a parliament, and the judiciary, but the system is unstable with frequent scrapping of programs in each new administration.<\/p>\n

The May 7, 2019 meeting saw a visit from division director, Corrine Corso, serving on the evening in the role of\u00a0Michael B. Christensen Family and Community Support Center<\/a>\u00a0board member to accept our donation of\u00a0$1,000<\/strong>\u00a0to the New England District\u2019s prevention of child abuse center and model.<\/p>\n
